Dec. 13th Small Cap Discovery Conference

Wall Street Reporter's Small Cap Discovery Conference was truly a successful event. It was held at the lovely Harvard Club in Mid-town Manhattan, and featured executives from several promising companies. There was nary an extra seat in the house, as the room was filled with well over 150 analysts, hedge fund managers, and prominent investors.
There were some solid companies, representing some high growth industries in attendance. Shea Development Corp. (SDLP.OB) specializing in on-demand software, Grower's Direct Coffee (GWDC.OB) gave away samples of their coffee, and Electro Energy (Nasdaq:EEEI) demonstrated their lithium-ion battery technology. These were just a few of the companies involved. The presentations were kept short, and the executives were available for questions during the cocktail hour afterwards.
It was a great event with a great turn-out, and I look forward to seeing these events grow in popularity.

Portfolio Recap: Dec. 11, 2007

I think what happened yesterday to the markets is rather well documented, so I will not not go into much detail. The Fed's quarter point reduction in both the funds rate and the discount rate did not give traders what they wanted. The Fed was also clear the the US economy is already slowing, but they want to fight inflation as well. The market sold off, and so did nearly all the stocks in the Portfolio. On the bright-side, the market looks poised for a strong open Wednesday morning, and hopefully we can make up for yesterday's debacle. Best of Luck!

Portfolio Weekend Round-UP

Let's take one final gander at the Portfolio for the week. It was a strong week for the markets, and a strong week for the Portfolio. A modest jobs number on Friday has set the table for a very uncertain Fed meeting on Dec. 11th. In my opinion, if we do not see a 50 basis point cut from the Fed, the markets will sell-off. Best of luck.

Altius Minerals
ALS.TO - Down 10 cents on Friday, but had a huge week on refinery news. Also, hit a new 20 day high of $28.24 during the week.
Ansys ANSS - Finished the week where it started. Seems to be some consolidation in the stock price, and the 5, 20, and 50 day SMA are within 60 cents of one another. Watch for some cross-overs.
Aegean Marine Petroleum ANW - Dry Bulk is not dead, and ANW has rebounded a little this week.
Anadarko Petroleum APC
- A very big week on news of a new discovery in the Gulf of Mexico. The stock is sitting at its 52 week high.
ART Technology
ARTG - Finished a strong week, up 10 cents on Friday. Hit a new 20 day high on Thurs., and is creeping up to its 52 week high of $4.65.
Aspreva Pharma ASPV - This stock has been trading in the narrowest of ranges for over a month. News one way or the other could be what the street is waiting for. Look for a move on high volume.
Yamana Gold AUY - Gold has been trading erratically, and so has Yamana. Two nice up-days to finish the week are a positive sign.
Aspen Technology AZPN
- A nice week has this stock sitting just below its 52 week high of $17.96.
China Mobil CHL
- This stock seems to have been anointed the "Emerging Mobile du jour", but Friday's sell-off of 3.5% makes you scratch your head. In an interview with Jim Trippon, editor of China Stock Digest, he said that he would wait for a pull-back into the mid $80's before buying CHL.
Core Labs CLB - Up modestly for the week. Seems to be developing a base in the $118-$120 range. Not showing the strength of other energy stocks.
China Medical CMED - The great week for China did not exclude CMED. Hit a new 20 day high of $45.53 on Thurs.
Capella Education
CPLA - Gave away almost all of its weekly gains on Friday, dropping 4.3% for the day.
Devon Energy DVN - Falling natural gas inventories helped Devon have a strong week, hitting a new 20 day high of $89.00 on Thurs.
EnCana
ECA - Traded lower early in the week on news of a new debt offering, but ended the week with three straight up-days.
Euronet Worldwide EEFT - Four straight up-days to end the week has Euronet sitting just below the 52 week high of $33.25 it reached on Thurs.
Energy Conversion Devices ENER - A big week for Solar stocks meant a big week for ENER. The stock tested its 52 week low, and has rebounded nicely, signaling that the down trend may have ended.
ISHARE MSCI BRAZIL F EWZ - Three up-days to close the week, and hit a new 20 day high on Friday.
iShares European Monetary Union EZU - Same as above.
European DJ Stoxx 50 FEU - Up for the week. Hit a new 20 day high on Friday, but closed down on the day.
Female Health Co. FHC - Stopped a serious skid with large volume day on Thurs.
Focus Media Holding FMCN - Here is another "anointed" stock that can't find its way. Down on Friday.
FPL Group
FPL - Finished the week up, with news of a downgrade and a request to add more capacity in Palm Beach County. The Dow Jones Utility Index hit all-time highs this week.
First Solar FSLR - Can you say volatility? Each move this week was over 3%.
Frontier OIL FTO - Up 2.3% on Friday, but down for the week. Looks to be trading sideways in a range of $41-$46. There are a lot of questions about the refiners right now.
Gafisa S.A. GFA - An Adrian Day, blasted through its all-time high with three strong up-days to close the week.
GoldCorp GG - This senior gold miner has found some traction with a solid week.
Gol Air GOL - A strong Friday, up 4.2%, capped off a strong week for GOL. Low oil is always good for an airline.
Harvest Energy
HTE - I can not figure out why this stock has dropped so much. It sits just above its 52 week low, yielding and astronomical 17.4%.
iShares S&P Latin 40 ETF ILF - Three strong days to close the week had ILF hitting a new 20 day high.
Kinder morgan Energy Partners KMP - Up every day this week and hitting a new 20 day high on Friday.
Coca-Cola
KO - The classic defensive play has been working like a charm. Up every day this week and hitting a new 52 week high on Friday.
KV Pharma KV-A:NYSE - Finished the week little changed, seemingly putting an end to its down streak.
LEV Pharma LEVP - Down for the week. This stock is waiting for the FDA ruling on its late stage drug which should come before the end of the year.
Micros Systems MCRS - Little changed for the week, the stock finished a couple points off its 52 week high of $74.98.
Noble Corp. NE - A mixed week. It hit a 20 day high on Friday, but still closed down 22 cents on the day.
Owens Illinois OI - A very strong week had OI hitting a 52 week high on Friday.
optionsXpress OXPS - Announcing a dividend could not push the stock above its 52 week high.
Petrolero Braziliero PBR - The Brazilian resource story is far from over. The stock was up huge for the week.
Claymont Steel PLTE - A downgrade by CIBC sent the stock down 97 cents on Friday. This turnaround story may not show up in the numbers until 2nd qtr. of 2008, according to portfolio manager Michelle Stevens.
Potash Corp.
POT - A great week for Potash had the stock seeing 52 week highs on Friday.
Transocean Inc. RIG - The stock finished little changed for the week.
CVRD RIO - A very strong week. Chinese demand for steel is not going away any time soon.
ProShares Ultra Short S&P500
SDS - Not a great week, but a must own for defensive reasons. A nice hedging idea going into the Fed meeting on the 11th.
Synaptics Inc. SYNA - Holiday gadget demand should make this stock a no-brainer, but it finished the week little changed.
Telefonica Sa TEF - Traded sideways this week. Little changed.
UniBanco UBB - Pulled back from a 20 day high reached on Thurs., but an overall strong week for this Brazilian bank.
United Online UNTD - What a terrible slide for this stock. Down 15% on Monday, and never gained traction. This stock now yields around 6.2%. It literally pays to wait for this value play.
Urban Outfitters
URBN - This retailer hit its 52 week high on Friday, but finished the day of 42 cents.
URS Corp. URS - Ended a horrible week on an high note Friday. Finished the day up 2.9%. Little news out of this stock since the final merger details were released.
Meridian Bioscience VIVO - The stock seems to have tested a Low reached in Oct., and rebounded nicely. A strong week, up three straight days to finish the week.
WWA GROUP
WWAG.OB - This stock is rather illiquid. It finished the week unchanged. Peter Leeds reiterated that the prospects for Dubai and WWA Group look stronger than ever.
Cimarex XEC - Strong week for Natural gas explorers, and a strong week for XEC.

Portfolio Recap; Dec. 5, 2007

Here comes the daily list of the Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Some positive economic news sent stocks higher right from the open. New Stocks from Recent WSR Interviews

Kelley Wright; Editor of Investment Quality Trends 11/29/07
IQ Trends identifies a stock's value with respect to historical dividend yields. Kelley rattled off the current list of the "Timely 10", and we discussed two, less familiar, companies in a bit more detail. Here is the list: JNJ, MCD, ADP, ROH, CCL, JKHY, CTAS, TFX, WMT, AIG.
Cintas CTAS - uniform maker has increased profits 30 years in a row and increased its dividend almost 10% a year.
Teleflex TFX - Industrial conglomerate with a great dividend history.

It was great to do a follow-up with the "Penny Stock Pro". We discussed the two stocks recommended in out last interview; MOVE & WWAG.OB. While both have slumped lately, he believes that the fundamental outlook remains strong for these stocks. He also recommended two new stocks:
Ediets.com DIET - Online dieting, recipes, and a meal delivery system. The company continues to grow and deliver strong guidance.
California Micro Devices CAMD - Semiconductors have been slumping lately. CAMD has cut costs by shifting R&D to India and 90% of sales some from Asia.

James Powell; Editor of Growth Stock Alert 11/29/07

Orbital Sciences ORB - This co. produces nano-satellites and small rockets for the gov'ernment and telecom uses.
Resource America Inc. REXI - This asset mgmt. company has been beaten up lately. A recent acquisition of Dolphin Capital will definitely boost revenue.
Zoltek Companies Inc. ZOLT - Produces carbon fiber primary used for wind turbines. Blew earnings away recently and Jim says "this is the best way to play wind-power". It has my vote.
NWT Uranium Corp. NWURF.OB - Recently renamed, and currently involved in merger talks with Numex. James is hesitant to add to his position until the terms of this deal are established. A good speculative play with property in the Uranium-rich Niger region.

Harry Domash; Editor of Winning Investing 11/30/07
Dynamic Materials BOOM - Uses explosive charges to weld dissimilar metals together. Material used in oil refineries and chemical plants because heat and corrosion resistance is needed. Ventas Inc. VTR - Healthcare REIT, owns retirement properties and rents them out to operators. grows through acquisitions 10-14%, and yields roughly 4%

Portfolio Update; Nov. 28, 2007

It was a fantastic day for the Portfolio. It started the day up 7.3% and finished the day up 10.0%. While every stock in the portfolio was up (except for energy, it was a tough day for oil), it is important to remember that many of them were under their 50 day M.A. and looking very weak. Remain cautious, but enjoy the gains.

I am going to take this opportunity to mention a few stocks that have been mentioned. I have interviewed three smart guys recently, and I wanted to do a little recap.
Stephen Check; Editor of the Blue-Chip Investor
If it is undervalued Large-caps that you seek, Steve told us to look no further than these three beat-up stocks:
MBIA Inc. MBI - This credit insurer has seen better days, but Steve points out that MBI has been through crisis before and has never to pay out a claim. He calculates the current book value at $54 and the adj. book value at $80.
Staples SPLS - This stock has traded straight down since April, but Steve, ever the optimist, says that slowing business growth may shake some of their competitors right out of business. Interesting fact; SPLS is the number 2 Internet retailer (according to Steve).
Harley Davidson HOG - The stock was up 40% last year, but has given it all back this year. While Steve admits that a slowing economy and an aging Baby-Boomer will hurt HOG's sales, he believes that international sales will help the turn-around. The stock also trades at 12.8x earnings, historically undervalued.
Drew Crum; Publishing & Entertainment analyst - Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.
We discussed technology's impact on the publishing and entertainment industries. then we discussed his favorite company in each industry.
John Wiley JWA - This publishing company acquired one of its biggest competitors. The acquisition has loaded the balance sheet with debt, but instantly increased free-cash flows. He has set a price target of $53.
Marvel Entertainment MVL - Drew believes that the starting their own production company will smooth out otherwise "Lumpy" earnings. MVL has two blockbuster releases next year, Hulk and Ironman, which should give the stock a boost. He has set a $35 price target.
Doug Fabian; Editor of Makingmoneyalerts.com
Doug is an ETF guru, believes that the US markets are do for a rally, while the Asian markets will cool off. For traders, he recommends FXP, which essentially shorts the Chinese index, and EEV, which shorts emerging markets. For investors, he recommends EFA, Morgan Stanley's International Blue-Chip ETF.
Domestically speaking, he would be long all the major index funds, in anticipation of a year-end rally.
